The reason we're moving to this is because the subsidy is variable and has very big swings. I hope people realize how limited it is, it's ok right now, but that's not a guarantee because California is limited in what people can offer and also limited in our options. Out of 29 months we've been profitable for 8 months. The reality is the paid supporters for the majority of the sites operation has supported the free users. As the advertisers came, we were able to do more things.
The model works very differently in the 2A space. Paid is just a wait to reduce scammers and ensure better quality listings. A lot of people said Armslist lost a lot, but reality after some investigation, they are still very large 95k listings and a nationwide network. TacSwap requires it, other locations require ID, TexasGunTraders, etc. While those reasons are valid, our reason is specifically to reduce scammer listings/moderation and also decrease the number of unresponsive members.
For every one we reduce, that's multiplied by the number we see and over time that adds up. The specific indirect problem is unresponsive listings, there will be fewer because free accounts by far are the most unresponsive. We make these smaller changes to tune in less resources, higher quality listings, is a better experience for everyone.
The member that want extra features or to support the site to help our ops and ultimately ability to spread the word and continue to build out other tech. Our bill trackers and roster tracker are now information resources with alerts and links to sources. The purpose is for the site to grow as an information hub for members and support the clubs and up and comers.
