For all? Why would I ask for division if I was wondering if certain members would be favored over others?

If a mod says something not right in a OT thread, and others call the mod out, would the mod ban the member out of anger? Would this be ok'd by other mods or would the other mods ban the angered mod instead? Etc..

Not what I meant. If anything I meant no holds barred from moderation it was more rhetorical cause usually people get upset at mods in OT. Very rarely does everyone think a mod is unbiased. There will always be people who think the mod is favoring someone else.

I am ambivalent about an OT section. I viewed CGN primarily for Califonia-related firearm-centric topics like the marketplace, gun laws, and researching what I want to purchase next. I would only occasionally peak in the OT section out of boredom.

Having an OT section can be nice for certain topics, like the one where someone asked about insurance companies for people in CA. It makes sense to ask users from the same state. I also believe allowing OT topics would keep the site's traffic higher, as it would more quickly build a community-like feeling.

At the same time, I can see it being a pain to moderate and keep everyone happy. It's a simpler solution not to allow anything OT as users can just go to Reddit, or another forum.

If allowing any OT threads though, I would create a sub-forum for it as they clutter the "General Discussion" when that is presumably for general firearm-related topics. Maybe that is just my OCD speaking though. If I am wrong about this being general firearms talk I would add one under the Firearms Discussions section.

Either way, I'm just happy to have a working forum increasing membership

OT was a lot of fun. There are artards there, so that's problematic. I do like the analysis of Ukraine and some other threads. I still hold out hope that they'll fix it.

The Bear Pit is insane. One thing I like about the hide is they moderate the technical portions well. Saw some resident ass wipes finally get the hammer from their trashy attitudes. When they came back its like they were a different person...

Yep exactly that’s what I like about it too. My personal opinion is there should be an outlet for people to go and have banter, but buckle up and put your big boy pants on. Either way I just want to see this place grow. If I need to go talk some , I’ll head over to the bear pit.

We're holding off for now. I see it is popular but I want to grow the site in features more than moderation. I'd rather see how we can make the site grow with people who like to grow the 2A community vs distract from it. I'd really like this to be a resource website. Where people come to submit product reviews, guides, shop, cool information, and have the forum be more of a perk than the main feature. More like ShootingUSA where we try to make the sport more popular and attract eyeballs.

I respectfully disagree that my posts are passive-aggressive. Strong? Yes. Assertive? Yes. Contrary? Sometimes. Accurate and fair? Yes. But I take care specifically not to be passive-aggressive. I hope people can distinguish the difference.

I've been on CGN since 2011 and made many irl friends that have been great. I am also a paid contributor and done several volunteering for our community in CA. CL lounge was for paid contributors and hardly ever gone too far. The ones that did cause trouble were the ones that received contributor status by someone else gifting it to them. fp would be an example, I know him irl.

But you wouldn't have your user name currently here without OT, it came come OT and wouldn't have happened without OT.

there is a lot of mods that are mia, I don't think anything is getting reviewed. there are some CL members that are weird, I don't hang out there much anymore.

Not necessarily true, because my user name came from somebody asking about changes to gun laws. Which is what calguns used to be about until it devolved into a safe space for curmudgeons, the critical thinking impaired, conspiracy theorists, and emotionally fragile bigots. So if there was no OT, it would have been discussed in several other more appropriate sections like laws, general, or handguns. It did not come from some completely unrelated non-firearm discussion. And I'm not even sure it actually originated in OT, as you claim. I don't recall what section it originated in. If it did originate in OT, it never should have been there to begin with since it isn't an OT topic.

One of the reasons why I like this site is because there is no off-topic. IMHO off-topic is nothing but a trolls playground attracting the most repulsive and hateful juvenile locker-room rhetoric you can imagine: ... If that is how you want to market this site to others trying to get into the 2A community, well good luck. .... I think it would be a shame to allow this site to devolve into that.

I agree 100% If the admins decide to allow an OT then it MUST be opt in only and hidden from the main site. What the OT fans do not realize us that there were 1 million new gun owners last year. If those folks finally find this site and have a look around, they MUST NOT see the OT. It must be hidden, OPT in only. 99 in a hundred finds OT chatter offensive, repulsive,... Most people decide who their friends will be, or not. Very few seek out OT types as a best buddy. So that group will stop by for a look, be turned off by the OT and then they are gone with the wind. Never to return.

There is a world of platforms, websites, and apps that are essentially 'Off Topic'. And all the 'Off Topic' forum on Calguns ever amounted to was retread or cut-and-paste replicating the exact nonsense of Yahoo, CNN, TMZ, Youtube, Democratic Underground, Hello Giggles, or a thousand other inane resources all over the web. You can find it there, so leave it there, no need to bring the remnants sifted out of their littered cat-box and deposit them here.

For everything else that cluttered up 'Off Topic', the memes, the fart/buttstuff/poop jokes, the Ford vs. Chevy arguments - just a waste of space.

And I wholly believe that the 'Off Topic' forum became a distraction on Calguns. It pulled focus and encouraged dissension from the important 'On Topic' forums. I would even bet that a large percentage of schleps that haunted the 'Off Topic' forum on Calguns were not even gun owners.

If I want to talk 'Off Topic' I go to the gagillion places available on the internet to do exactly that. When I come to 'caguns' I want to focus on CA Guns. It's right there in the title of the Forum and its internet address. Stay focused my friends.

So I do hope caguns remains 'Off Topic' free.

SH Bear Pit is great. People berede each other with lots of cussing but in the end we all share the same common goal. Its great to let out steam once in awhile. Does it get out of hand, sometimes. But, cooler heads always prevail. Seldom do people get banned. It's not racist/homophobic or any other pc name you want to call it. I would suggest keeping it open for signed in users only and not open for the public.

I commented on CGN OT about my personal benefits from an ebike and PHEV and was treated as if I was serving tomatoes during Victorian times. Got temporary banned for replying “ok boomer”.
I also own 2 vehicles with V8 engines btw.

LOL. Yup. Exactly. I was temp banned once for using the "b" word. The "tough" guys in OT are really thick-skinned alright. Seriously though, the users that push for OT, are the most emotionally fragile and easily triggered. They are downright outraged if anyone posts something different from them or challenges their extremely warped, insecure idea of masculinity. Heaven forbid anyone starts a thread or makes a post about a Subaru. Instantly a bunch of them would line up to run a train on the poor chap, making derogatory comments about being a lesbian. Then after they thoroughly embarrassed themselves they would mock the OP for never returning to post in the thread. Gloating about it and giving each other virtual "high-fives" for bullying someone off the site. No self-awareness whatsoever. It was pretty repulsive. Really hope this site doesn't devolve into being a safe space for that kind of bigotry. There's already enough drama in real life. We don't need more of it online.
