I actually wanted to call it something like this. I just want to talk 2A stuff or relevant things we can take action on. I'm sure there's good conversations, but my impression of OT thus far isn't good.

What makes you say that? Because early on a single thread about cussing went haywire within 20 posts and two guys desperately needed a hug.

I view it the same way I do the profanity filter option, because it allows people to participate to whatever extent they prefer, and boosts traffic that might not otherwise come here. The Tacoma World forums are kinda like that, and isn't just focused entirely on trucks, but also have OT subs dedicated to music, guns, food, travel, etc. Makes the site a lot more interesting.

That said, I think people should really stop defaulting towards more restrictive moderation of this site in the worry that people might do something bad, and just focus on what's actually happening. If someone gets out of control, deal with the problem swiftly and without fanfare, but there's no need to make ourselves or ikeo crazy worrying over hypotheticals. Just my 2 cents.

You are correct sir. Over moderation is the exact reason California is the nanny state it has become.
Why not look at a possible future OT as a place of bonding with other 2A folk instead of all the hand wringing and memories of not being invited to the cool kid parties?

OT as CGN OT is a no go. I'm not really concerned about traffic. I'm getting rather busy with larger roles at the club and I have less time due to work picking up. Also, 2A is a sensitive subject. I had to form an LLC for this site and I'm currently looking for 2A legal help to dot my i's and cross my t's. I used to do compliance for big corps so I'm not trying to f with the state.

I'm just not a fan of political or religious bonding on here. Food, general interest, sports, etc, all good in casual corner.

Hypothetical is one thing, but you know or should assume the alphabet dept are watching. Last thing I want is for this site to affect other things I'm doing. For now, we'll keep building, but I take nothing for granted.

Absolute deal-killer on any level. As we've seen with the state and media's malicious release of Californians' private CCW info, there are too many bad actors on the internet that would love nothing more than to get their hands on users' personal info, along with pictures of their collections.

I wouldn't think too hard on it, and don't make yourself crazy trying to overmoderate or give in to complainers either. That's a black hole that can never be filled. A more hands-off approach, backed up by simple, no nonsense rules/penalties for toxic behavior and forum abuse is typically the best way of dealing with things.

Hand out some delete buttons and ban hammers and spend your time on 2A comms.

Yes we can do that. The FFL’s moderate their own forums. Before we get there, we’re building up the 2A core. The site is growing though, almost 7100!!

Part of the roadmap but more of a side quest. I’ve put in the tech to make Casual Corner opt-in as well. I just want to focus on the buyer/seller tools for a bit. I have some deals I’m working on as well. We’ll have our site sponsor coming online soon. . The community is growing and I’m not one to rush things. I have a priority list that I’m working through.

As long as people are respectful, I’ll accommodate requests. I think we can build something cool here that’s different and back to old school a bit where we can get a long without the drama. That is a core value I’d like to see here. Might be wishful thinking, but so far CGN and Redditors are getting along only a few hiccups here and there.

This has, thus far, been the deal-breaker with this site for me. I originally came to CGN for information on California gun laws when I had to move back here after living out of State for a number of years. But I stayed because of OT and the political (and other OT) discussions with like-minded patriots there. Like it or not, politics and 2A are indefinitely co-mingled and to not be able to discuss politics somewhere here is a no-go for me personally. OT was like a refuge for the (relatively) few California conservatives who remain in this bat-chit crazy State. I'm convinced that was why the OT forum there was far bigger than any of the other forums there and what drove most of the day-to-day traffic to that site. I definitely miss having access to that version of OT.

I'm convinced this was actually what lead to the demise of the site. r/CAguns with 90k users is a sect of CGN for people who primarily want to discuss 2A. On CGN, the OT section overwhelmed the 2A section so it became more of a hangout to chit chat than to discuss 2A and introduce new shooters.

Not only that, its a huge time and resource suck. Mods have to read every message, builds animosity because they have to follow rules, none of which adds to 2A premise of the site. Also, its very expensive to operate. Before CGN moved back to dedicated server, the cost was estimated at $800/mo. They've moved to a $220/mo dedicated server now, but still resource constrained in a few ways. Our cost is also significant, because of the extras we add here. It's more than a basic forum on a server in the closet. The search feature alone with saved search is already over $1k. Not including the security add-ons, services, etc. I haven't broke even yet, but I'm going to soon. So i have to work with the limited resources and why I say, i want to hear from more people who have skin in the game. Overwhelmingly those who pay, don't want it, mostly free accounts want OT.

My goal here, was to take a step back to put 2A at the front, where OT as you mention brought most people and used the most resources. I still think CGN will return, but the focus will be OT vs 2A. Where our focus is 2A and not OT. You can bounce between the two if you'd like and there's a clear distinction between the two.

Here my goal is to introduce, educate, and train 2A enthusiasts for sport or self defense, not to hang out in a forum. Some people like to do that, so I oblige, but it will not be the main focus of the site. It's a side thing. I'd rather keep the site small and focused, than big and unmaintainable.
