OT is bait for more 2A related traffic/users.SH's Bear Pit has 55k threads and 2 million posts it is only 2nd to the marketplace. People go there for their morning wood and then venture off into the other forums or the other way around.
How long can you stick around in the reloading section for example? You go there, post, read threads and new posts and then you're out. More traffic and more user counts will be more attractive to sponsors and advertisements. If you can keep your idealogy and rake in some revenue, why not?

I kinda like the way the other forum does (hint: they talk about Glock 
) -- It has a Lounge forum and a Political forum.
The Lounge forum is like CG OT minus the political discussions, and the Political forum is for discussions of the latest political events.

I am new here but have been a CGer for 9 or so years and a Lifetime Contributor. I don’t mind paying for information, entertainment and anything pro 2A.
Glad this question is being bantered around. Everything has plus and minus issues. More traffic equals more vendor visibility and more information for users to learn from. Any site worth a damn gets trolls. Users can discern them as they become more involved in the site.
I like having 2A site options for people to browse and contribute to. I was a newby to the whole gun, 2A and shooting sports world. Calguns helped me learn safety, guns and the whole world of 2A. We (CA and the site) need others to get involved…if an OT attracts them to the site…it may be a good thing.

This is my primary objective. There's a lot of new users out there especially with the roster opening up a bit and CCW's allowed. There's a renaissance with 2A going on right now. Gucci Glocks are very 2010-2020 and now its all about the new gear and stock picks or the 2011's. Lots of cool stuff came out in the last 2-3 years so a lot of interest is back in 2A.

I think the OT section on Calguns overtime became such a diseased part of the animal that it spoiled the meat.
I get it, no matter what you choose you will not please everyone. I just do not think on a gun/2A focused website that an OT Section invites good optics into law abiding gun owners, period, full stop.

I am another no vote.
The OT section on Calguns had it's share of awesomeness. But, it also had a share of homophobia, misogyny, racism, and objectification of women. All of these not only discourage participation of gun owners, but also potentially turn away people interested in learning more about gun ownership.
A California-based gun site should be doing what it can to encourage people to embrace, enjoy, and support the Second Amendment. An Off-Topic, with the issues described above, doesn't help. Furthermore, it's just a bad look for gun owners. It provides some reinforcement for the incorrect stereotype some push that gun owners are primarily right-wing loons. So, let's have a site that reflects the true diversity. Doing so is also political capital.
The only way I see an Off-Topic working would be with robust moderation, and that's a demand on peoples' time. I don't see anything wrong with a site streamlined for gun ownership. Come for the marketplace, gun information, California legality, etc.
