Being Flagged while doing Public CCW Quals?

So do you agree that the only time you practice shooting is at the CCW quals?

I thought #4 meant you were not the shooter that was shooting at the walls and ceiling. There was another comment about people who only practice during their CCW qual renewal.

A guy shot himself in the leg while we were at a local range a few years ago. Hot brass went down his shirt. Looked like he arched his back and lowered the gun straight down and he shot the back of his leg. It went in the back of his calf and out by his shin.

He was in the 25 yard and we were in the 50. We were walking out and he was in the hallway bleeding everywhere looking for help. My wife (an RN) sat him down to keep him calm till the staff came in to start first aid.

The range staff was all over it and handled the situation quickly and professionally.




My ccw qual a lady, who was trying to look like a female operator with whatever was available a Kohls, was doing her qual. I knew she was slow as I watched her fishing her belt through a clip on holster. As we are getting directions her gun a holster come off and fall on the ground in the middle of the class on the pavement. When we started shooting it took her about about 2 minutes for the 6 shots at 5 yards. When she went to clear her gun she flagged the whole class down the line. The instructor saw it and slapped her hand forward. Next distance i shot all 6 rounds in about 5 seconds and stepped back. She did the same thing again, took forever and flagged everyone. The instructor told her one more time and she was out. She finished shooting and I glance at there target and it's shot everywhere. She barely made it with a few just clipping the edges. If I took that long to shoot it better be a 2" group or smaller. She didn't have 2 rounds within 2" of eachother in the whole target......she passed

Do you think it was a good thing California extended the CCW required course time? Maybe its a good thing to stop these incidents.

Instead of extending it they should add a safe handling demonstration with a fake firearm or dummy round. The instructor and everyone else doesn't know how people handle firearms till they have loaded guns on the range for the qual. Hell, you need to show how to load and unload a dummy round when you purchase one. Do the same thing before live fire.

My experience they give you the affidavit to show safe handling but don't grade you or evaluate your safe handling

I think a huge part of this problem is that there are ALOT of new shooter who have never handled a gun. Since COVID we are seeing more people who buy a gun out of fear, lock it up, never practice, and forget about it. I's bet that a wave of those are now going for their CCW again put of fear.

The standards for CCW quals are rather shocking.

If you do ANY of that at a USPSA match, you’re DQ’d and sent packing due to a breach of safety rules.

Wow, guess I'm fortunate. I qual at the SDSO Range. They have a set up with three shooting positions. One R/O at each position. I've never seen any one commit a safety violation there.

She should have been failed. Some people have zero situational awareness.

You referring to when purchasing one? If you have CCW, you're exempt from having to demonstrate safe handling.

The guy next to me got flagged and grabbed the dude's gun and threw it downrange instinctively. The flagger got kicked out of the class and will be rescheduled for the next session.

Even if someone was accidently flagged it would not give them the right to grab and damage someone else's property. He should of put his gun down and notified the RSO.

His rationale was that he didn’t want to get shot when he saw the muzzle of the gun pointed at him. It wasn’t a quick twist laser it was resting pointed towards him lol

Still grounds to boot him from the class and make him pay any damages for the firearm. It is extremely dangerous to try and remove a gun from someone's hand without their consent especially when its pointing at you. Stepping back is much safer and the person who did that is lucky they didn't get shot.,... That logic makes zero sense.

I would be WAY more worried about "Instructors grabbing a gun and throwing them downrange" or "Instructor slapping the gun hand" of gal in tank top, than being flagged.

I just finished my renewal qual class for San Mateo County. Used the same group Saber Tactics for my initial qual and renewal. Both classes went fine as far as I could tell. On the renewal class one guy could not start the qualify as he came to class with the wrong holster and had to reschedule. In my renewal class I did flag the instructor at the table when we were verifying serial numbers. No tossing of gun and no hand slapping occurred. I just got a friendly reminder.

I always try to remember we were ALL newbies at one point and I bet many of us flagged or otherwise did something stupid when we first starting using firearms. (This sentence separated for those that will inevitably quote and say "I have never done that").

San Mateo County quail is 6 shots twice at 10yrds, 6 shots twice at 7yrds, and 6 shots twice at 5yrds.
All 6 shots within silhouette. I passed with WAY larger groups than 2". In fact all of us in that shooting group had very large groupings.
