Being Flagged while doing Public CCW Quals?

Yes. The deputies at 2 of my quals told they used to be very “pro 2A”, but after taking that job they’re worried about both the lack of training and preparedness along with the rapidly increasing volume of CCW applications.
Yeah right. It's 0.7% to 1.0% of California adults

Depends on the county and/or municipality. When I scheduled my initial qual (early last year) and earliest available was 10 days out.

Then I modified to change guns a couple months later and it was 6 weeks out.

Did another modification and in February and had to 10 weeks out.

At my re-qualification earlier this year, everyone could hit the target at all required distances (3-5-7 yards). Only one, who freely admitted he never practiced, barely stayed inside the B-27 target.

Scary that ppl who can’t hit from 3 yards away are carrying. Why would you even want to do that? I just don’t understand wanting to carry a firearm that you can’t actually aim and shoot 9 feet.

Hitting the ceiling or walls instead of paper would make me want to practice and get training.

Admittedly I hadn't been shooting for years when I did my CCW qual, but it is pretty easy...

I wasn’t upset about the guy who hadn’t practiced. He was careful, safe, and a bad shot. But he still was 100% within the target area at 7 yards.

I don’t think everyone has to be a grandmaster level shooter. Just safe. Missing the paper entirely is concerning from a safety perspective.

The main issue is the cost I think, the class itself I'm kinda ok with. But why is a privilege to drive a death machine like $50 yet a "right" costs over $1k+?
My issue is with the high cost, long time to go through the months long process, and moving to a different county requires you to start the process all over again.

Exactly, don't have to do that with a driver's license, super cheap and easy to get and you get to drive a massive deadly weapon.

Does anyone have a similar experience. Was doing a CCW renewal course and saw at least three of eight people on the firing line mishandling, flagging, and or having their fingers on the trigger before it was time to fire. The guy next to me got flagged and grabbed the dude's gun and threw it downrange instinctively. The flagger got kicked out of the class and will be rescheduled for the next session. I was genuinely concerned and next renewal plan to bring body armor and a helmet to prevent any injuries on the range. Are the requirements for CCWs now getting way to easy that inexperienced or untrained people are ending up qualifying and carrying firearms in the community. Asking if anyone had similar experiences or maybe I just got a bad batch.
Most of experienced shooters do this type of stuff lol. People get comfy and complacent

Cops are not the best shooters either, in target acquisition or gun safety. Like any crowd, some are worse/some are better. From what I've seen at bay area ranges they (as a group) are same or slightly below civilians. YMMV.

Hard to do well when you only go to the range every two years to requalify. Sadly, that's the vast majority of CCW holders (non-scientific opinion, but a show of hands at my last renewal was around 80% hadn't shot for that long.

Threat Scenarios had good quals before the state put their low bar requirements. It was 5-25 yards and depending on the instructor , stress testing and shooting multiple targets on the move using cover.

It seems insane to me to want to carry but not want to put any effort into the skill set you need to use your weapon.

Last renewal at a different place , they asked if anyone had taken any courses or competed since the previous renewal. I was the only one who raised a hand. The skill set needed for CCW is perishable.

The Issuing Agency sets the shooting criteria for the qualification, not the state nor the trainer. SB 2 required that there be a live-fire shooting qualification in the training program for both initial and renewal certification, but did not establish the criteria.

Yeah oddly enough, Sacramento county made their test significantly easier. Our teacher let us do the older harder test because the new one is a joke.

Having politicians who have zero gun experience set the laws and policies for firearms leads to these issues. The idea is to come as close to banning them completely as possible. Hence the emphasis on adding qualifications to getting a CCW without truly focusing on what is taught, and what is useful.

This happens for every law to some extent, but they usually at least confer with those affected by the law to have some expert opinions involved.

Honestly, seeing those who want to have a CCW who never practice is frightening. Why carry if you have no chance of hitting your target in the case where you actually need it? Thats a level of insanity I don’t understand. The CCW becomes worse than useless, it is a fatal liability.

There must be some logic to the entire CCW process. Making it extremely expensive and onerous to obtain a CCW is unfair. But having no skill or ability to operate the firearm is apparently a common thing as well.

Unfortunately, I’d say this is accurate. I’ve witnessed this firsthand as I’ve been able to train alongside a lot of LE and learn from former LE who actively provide training for agencies, this past year.

From what I've seen at bay area ranges they (as a group) are same or slightly below civilians. YMMV.
“Civilians” is too large of a group. But even a average competitor will outshoot most of the cops - who aren’t in a specialized unit - I’ve seen so far with regard to basic marksmanship.

The PROBLEM is that we don’t set high enough standards or provide enough money/resources for cops to train - or even live.

The cops who shoot well actually pay out of pocket for additional training/ammo and/or compete.

Either way, during RSO shifts at ranges I see the folks who come to practice for their upcoming qualifications and it also scares me.

I was just speaking to an officer in my city, and he noted that they get free ammo for training. Yes, they receive formal training infrequently, but range access and ammo are not an issue for the police in my town.

I’m in the SGV in LA County.

Did you ask how many free rounds they get or is it unlimited ammo? And what does range access mean? Is that equivilent to the static line at public ranges or something like an action training bay where they can setup dynamic drills?

His words were that he can shoot as much as he wants and never has to pay for ammo. He was nodding towards his handgun when he told me, so I don’t know if rifle calibers are also included.

It’s a static range, as far as I can tell. I didn’t ask if there was an action training bay. I doubt that. They have training twice yearly unless they belong to a specialized unit.
