CCW would 40sw be worth it or stick with 9mm?

Working on my CCW and just completed my interview last week. They suggested I should add another gun to my application just in case(don’t have to tell me twice). Currently have a shield 9mm and I’m looking at other options. Found another shield in 40sw but I’m debating on going for it since the price is good, or get something else in 9mm and keep it consistent. Need a bit of help lol

No, 40 S&W is not worth it. The difference is not enough to matter. If you want a true difference, move up to 10mm or 357 Magnum. The market has mostly discontinued making pistols in 40 S&W, so production support could be sparse. S&W doesn't even have a current production Shield in 40 on the roster.

You should put three on the permit (or max it out if more). If your Issuing Agency limits it to three, I recommend a pocket pistol, a primary carry, and a full size (whatever "full" means to you). If you have only the Shield, then you should buy a second Shield and set both up identically. Of course, you could use that one to practice with and not put it on the permit. But you certainly should have a duplicate of your main EDC to train and practice with. The last thing you want is for your EDC to break and the Issuing Agency won't allow you to change anything until renewal.

I'd add something like a Ruger LCP Max if you prefer a small pocket gun. Otherwise, perhaps choose a larger gun that you could use for home defense, hiking, or whatever activity. But, if you don't want to buy more than one handgun, then another Shield is the way to go.

So for pistols there is 9mm and .45 acp…..honorable mention to .22lr because cheap and revolver love goes to .357 . Everything else isn’t relevant. Don’t come at me .44 boys too expensive.

Full size, compact, tiny gun. Same gun in a different caliber makes no sense. Get an LCP or similar that can be thrown in gym shorts pocket.

I'd stick with 9. I seriously doubt there is any significant difference in effectiveness between 9 and 40 if the bullet is placed accurately. My understanding is that shot placement is what matters the most. Pretty much any round will stop a target if it is sent to the right location. I only shoot 40s that are easy to manage recoilwise like the P229, P226 and G22. Cant imagine how snappy a slim size 40 is. I only had a G23 for about a decade and that was snappy enough. After 50rds my wrist was done. Also got tired of paying more for ammo to go plinking. Now I pretty much only shoot 9mm and 45.

If I was going to add other rounds for CCW they would be 380, 38, and 45.

Pfft, G23 in .40 ain't no thang. all about proper grip. Drop a .357SIG barrel in it and get back to me. The only reason I don’t carry my G23 is it prints like a MoFo. My P229 in .40 just blends in nicely.

40 is a fine caliber. But the honest truth is most people will shoot the 9mm much better.

So those used P229s and P226s in 40 are usually great buys for around $500. Very easy to convert to 9 or 357 Sig since the later production frames are identical.

I think people sleep on the .357 sig to be honest. Ammo's more expensive and you usually have to add a sig barrel to your edc weapon but I think its worth it. I love running my xd subcompact in .357 sig. People that are saying get something small caliber size so you can shoot better are kinda weak imho lol. Learn to shoot what you like.

Stay away from the mete9, I've got the shield 40 and then I bought a 9 mm drop in Barrel. I'm not sure if you could do it vice versa

I believe most of the agents in the miami fbi shoot out used 9mm and .38's so. I think a lot of departments and military's also use the sig that self discharged so just because some agencies use 9mm isn't a selling point for me lol.

I don't think you can go from a 9mm to .40. I do in general like barrel changes it's a whole new weapon for $250 lol

40 shield is poop. I have a g23 on my ccw and I only carry it when im backpacking/camping - great gun and a lot more tame than a shield in 40. Otherwise I carry 9mm everyday.

Add a 357. You can shoot both 38 spl and 357. Very versatile.

I love dual caliber firearms. Like I said I run my two XD's with both .40 and .357 sig barrel. I also own a Ruger super redhawk alaskan in .44 magnum and .44 special.

The XD platform is great. One of the best shooting pistols on the market. In my opinion, it is the most underrated pistol. It’s accurate, very balanced and very ergonomic.

As far as dual calibers. I have been seriously considering the 357sig/9mm combo.

I just don't see it for CCW. I do have five .40s that I take to range regularly, even then, all five have conversion barrels (or uppers) for 9 mm.
