Gun Stores charging extra fee for PPT.

Ultimate Gun Shop in Montebello just charged my friend $37.19 for DROS and $75 for a dealer transfer fee. It was a face-to-face PPT...

good thing ive never and WILL never go there because that's just BS. I wanted to check them out but FF firearms has my business. Great store and quick.

the thing is, by law, we have to go to a FFL to do the PPT and by Law the FFL has to do the transfer. So it's not like any law abiding citizen has a choice (buyer or seller), I would think the FFL benifits because this brings possible new customers into their shop as well as last minute impulse buys (holster, ammo, gear, etc...).. so for FFL dealers to take advantage is not right. I've seen a guy whom moved to CA from out of state and brought in a nice off roster gun, Ade's gave him $250 for it and then months later, had it listed for $1200.. I dont know how they were able to list it but I didn't care to ask since it's none of my business and yes, they kept all the hi-cap mags. I know they sale a lot on gunbroker.

The "PPT Fee" is a load of crap and would mean that shop won't see a penny from me. The lock is some CA BS and is a thing.
The problem is that when the law passed (woth support of gunshops at the time) $10 was enough. It didn't go up with inflation and is now a burden. Typically my LGS will get an ammo or accessory purchase out of me with every PPT even if I can get it cheaper elsewhere.

I started a lock trade in program. You see the Penal Code and Federal Law do not mandate you buy a lock. It mandates that a lock be provided. If the dealer does not want to provide a lock, the consumer can provide a lock if it has a receipt that shows it was purchased in the last 30 days. I was able to acquire thousands of Project Childsafe GL710-NSSF locks from a few different sources after the NSSF was giving them away by the pallets to local PDs and hunter safety course programs. So I make sure your gun comes with a lock. If you donate a lock to me, it is not the same model of lock that I provide with your firearm. So you are not using a lock that you provided. I gave you one. Thank you for your donation.

I have not sold a lock in decades. However, I sure have given a lot away. Find you a dealer that works for you, not against you.

Small shops gotta keep the lights on and guzzline is what, $5 a gallon? The bigger shops with more employees and a more streamlined system shouldn’t do it, but what are you gonna do, move?

Stories that I heard as a child were that the FFLs had the same line of thinking when this law was being passed, at the time they supported it.
With the off roster thing, if they listed it available to general public, I've heard of shops taking off roster in on "consignment" but paying the customer up front. It gets a little sketchy on the paperwork.

Dealers can charge anything they want on a dealer SALE.
The $10 limit is on PPT's and that $9 charge falls within the $10 limit if they charge that on PPT's.

The $10 limit is for PPT's.
There is no limit on what FFL's can charge for dealer transfers/sales where the gun comes out of the dealer's inventory.
They can charge for assistance, processing, storage, access, entry, scheduling, air, electricity, water, lighting, security, parking or whatever they want on dealer transfers/sales.

I went into turners once to buy a shotgun. Asked what the extra fee they were charging me and they said it’s a processing fee. I walked out and never bought a gun there ever. It’s so short sighted to charge a processing fee when they could just roll it into the price of the firearm. Any shop that takes longer than 15 minutes to do a single gun PPT is not doing it efficiently. 20 minutes if their POS system requires them to log the gun into their books at the point of sale.

Beside the total cost of PPT $47. I will feel better if the FFL charge me $15-$20 more because they spend at least half an hour for doing paperwork and nowadays paying employees is costly. I am always giving a small amount of tip (saying for your drink or lunch) to the person who did my PPT when I am a seller as a way showing my sincerely appreciated them. Last time AA TACTICAL in Chino Hills charging the buyer I meet $50 on top of $47!!!, it was the buyer choose of FFL.

At Rifle Gear it’s like $47 out the door for a PPT. Many times I’m buying a brand new gun that they have sitting in their case underneath the paperwork that I’m filling out. They are extremely fast and it still takes around 30 minutes or so. They practically take everybody by the hand and make sure that paperwork isn’t ed up the FIRST time. All that and they gotta keep the lights on. It’s worth more than $10 to me. Find the ones that are cool and use them. If they are too far away then figure out how much gas is gonna take you to get somewhere where they are cool and see if it’s worth it. Either way, you’re still likely saving hundreds of dollars in taxes alone and many of these shops are not long for this world because of it.

There's a couple of local (small) places that get it done quickly. 15 minutes or so. Turner's manages to take over an hour at the El Cajon store. I've tried to shop there, but won't go there any more for firearms. It's just agony to have to stand up that long and wait, sometimes I've waited 2 hours. Wankers looking at guns, and then the Turner's process is brutal. Gussler's and Timoney's are very good. I Drove over 350 miles to transfer back a couple of pre-lock S&W from an old friend, and got well and truly hosed by the dealer up there. My friend had used the dealer to sell on consignment, so we had to go there for his sake - Rosster's Firearms in Templeton will overcharge for PPT's.

A few ffls around me will only do PPTs by appointment which in some cases are weeks out.

In my experience, 2A Zone Riverside is still top notch when it comes to PPTs for speed, cost, and accuracy.

Yep just got charged 90 bucks to do a PPT. That was my go to shop out of town. Looks like I'll be finding another
