Hopefully people understand a couple of things:
  • Law Enforcement know my identity and can and do file search warrants and request information and we are obligated by law to fulfill requests.
    • We've had more than one request now, so people who tell me don't worry about it, don't know what they're talking about.
    • We want to discourage use of the site by bad actors.
  • We can't review alll items and posts (we do a lot thanks to volunteers), but if you use the report button moderators will either remove the listing or ask them to update it with a proper configuration or ban immediately
  • There are A LOT of LEO / MIL here. Please don't be careless
    • We are thinking of opening up a First Responders Section with verified GovX logins.
That said:
  • We do not collect PII if not necessary
  • Our policies will be changing to set lifetimes as the size of the site grows, our retention policies will be updated to reduce cost as such which will also improve performance.

I would not appreciate having someone at a range offer their opinion (even by asking a thinly veiled question) about the legal configuration of my guns. Mind your own business if you’re going to be a Karen.

But…then again I often bring some oddball guns to shoot and I’m always happy to talk about them with fellow shooters if they are genuinely curious. I always make it a point to offer to let the other folks shoot my oddball guns as well because shooting strange and rare guns is awesome and I like to be a good ambassador of the sport and my collection.

I guess that means…approach me at your own risk? ;)
 
Coincidentally, while on the subject for people who do help us report. We're thinking of providing a badge for people who report verified issues. It's not implemented yet just an idea as the site grows we only have so many volunteer mods.

In this case if you got it, you would also get a physical patch as a perk but we also don't want a lot of false positives. So it's just an idea at the moment.

Why not just call it the "NARC" badge at least make the display of it optional. I wouldn't want that one.

In these situations, that "Karen" could save you from spending a year in prison, $75,000 in attorney fees and the loss of every gun you own. Personally, I would listen, say "thanks for letting me know" and then give it serious consideration. You never know, that "Karen" could be an off duty law enforcement officer doing you a HUGE favor.

Because not everyone is cynical. Some people are happy to get the badge.. Doesn't even have to be on the profile, they can get the physical patch. They are helping us keep the site functional through volunteering and should be recognized for being a positive contributor to the board.

But, if I am not mistaken you do collect members DOB and IP addresses, if you do not log the IP addresses directly, your CDN, Cloudflare certainly does. Also, as you prohibit the use of VPNs, the IP address along with the date of access is like a laser guided munition for law enforcement to identify just about anyone not to mention their real email address is also another great vector unless the member is using a service like Proton mail.

I have a question though, when you receive an identity seeking subpoena or warrant, do you notify the user? Of course you cannot do that if you get a National Security Letter or if there is an accompanying gag order but, those are relatively rare.

Perhaps, but some of the least gun-savvy people I know are cops. But that’s a whole other thread here. If you ever see me at the range and want to talk guns…give it a shot. 😂 you’ll know me by my patch

I never get to Ventura county. I have no idea what "patch" you are speaking of.

If you’re interested in the darkweb, this isn’t it. We’re above water trying to give regular people a place to go. If you want to be super secret and hiding all kinds of information on a public board, this isn’t the place. There’s other places on tor or even Calguns. Cloudflare data is not ours.

You seem to have a lot of ideas here and possibly the technical capability. How come you don’t start one like that? You can tell I’m from the corporate side and I can tell you don’t like it. Build it, you have the specs already.

There’s definitely a contingent that wants it. They always give me a hard time.

I read everything you wrote, twice. You collect enough PII for any law enforcement agency to identify every user, I just think it's important for everyone to know that.

In today's day and age, with the regime seeking the identities of people being critical of the regime, for simply exercising their first amendment rights, it's important for everyone who uses any website to jealously guard their identities and private information lest they have the thugs knocking in or at their doors.

If you do not notify the users of the warrants, you are depriving them of the ability to challenge that warrant in court, as is their right.

Helpful advice, even if helps you avoid an expensive mistake, is rarely appreciated by strangers. As such, I don’t do it that often anymore.
