Separate clothes for gun range?

I'd be curious to know how many people who have strong opinions have actually had their blood lead levels checked, along with the type of shooting/reloading they do, along with the precautions they do or do not take.

I bet it would be telling.

Do you all have range-only clothes? Is lead actually a big problem?

I have my own de-lead wipes, though most ranges have de-lead soap.

Just wondering about the clothes and gear side of things. I saw some people online worrying about it. I personally don’t have range-only clothes, but I’m wondering if I should, and if I should use special laundry detergent and do a separate wash.

I am not a doctor, everything i say is a lie, only a fool would take any of it seriously.

Over a long enough period and depending on of you shoot unjacketed lead slugs, yeah i can see it being an issue. But in an outdoor range you shouldn't have a dangerous exposure level. I would be far more worried about indoor ranges.

In this thread there are others who have frequent blood lead tests with no lead issues at all. Conveniently discounting them is, well, convenient.

After BLM shooting I stop at the Borrego campground and wash up with D-lead soap. I can also take a hot shower for a few quarters. I don't worry about lead fumes out in the desert or anyone else.

While washing your clothes, dedicated range clothes, showering etc, are GOOD ideas for sure, most of us are not addressing the air inside indoor ranges. Even the best venting doesn't move/filter enough lead based air out when there are 30 guys on the line shooting. Eyes, Mouth, Lungs are exposed and I have yet to see any shooter wearing a respirator or sealed goggles. During Covid, there were guys wearing N95s and other surgical masks, but lately I have not seen anyone wearing any kind of respiratory PPE

It's rare, but I've seen some shooters wear N95s and even P100s in indoor ranges. It might raise eyebrows, until your attention gets drawn over to the next bay where the guy's shooting from a static position while kitted out with a plate carrier and helmet

Theres actually some good info here.. Lead is a thing, I've tested high and it was mainly due to my reloading setup.. I was pushing a lot of volume. Spent cases was probably the bulk of it. Otherwise, N100's when you reload or at an indoor range.

For people who don't shoot a lot, I wouldn't worry about it.. It'll settle over about 30 days, if you shoot a lot, then its a problem because it'll settle in your bones.

If you have a brain you value it's good to protect it from known harm. Same reason we shouldnt be smokers or abusing other drugs. Same reason you wouldn't play with estrogen patches if a woman in your life uses those for hormone-replacement.

Worse, lead won't just harm you, it will harm every living being exposed to lead by you; wife or significant other, kids, pets etc. This is the same reason one shouldn't smoke around other living things...if you care about them.

Inhalation is by far the largest contributor of lead contamination while shooting. Do you wear a respirator at the range? If you're so concerned why don't you. It shouldn't be any more burdensome than eyes and ears.

Lots of ideas of how to minimize lead exposure. What about the car ride home? Your seat is a weak link in this regimen of wash `n wear.

Suggestion: Don a leaf bag before entering car. Remove and toss when home. We used to do this after muddy sports contests.

Edit to add: I won't be cutting a hole in the bottom of a Hefty bag to wear like a rain poncho on my next range visit. But thought to add in part to the cure instead of being part of the disease.*

It’s kinda fun to shoot dressed up and pretend you’re James Bond or something lol

I don’t think I’ve ever seen special soap at ranges either, where are you located that you see that?

Yeah same here, I go after work in my hospital scrubs all the time. I only wear them once between washes, pretty sure lead doesn't stick around that badly.

Included with my yearly blood test. Never an issue.

I’ll admit I haven’t but I’ll bet washing hands after the range/before eating, showering at the end of the day before going to bed, etc is likely sufficient mitigation. I will be asking the doc to add the test next time I get bloods though just to see, and if it’s high (I also love sushi) I will take other steps

That is correct, this is reasonable and good practice for most shooters.

Interesting how it’s dead silence so far from the bravado group of guys on here who were making fun of people who took lead accumulation prevention measures.

It’s funny. I work in healthcare for a living. Generally speaking, and cross-culturally, males are arrogant and dismissive about their physical health and drag their feet to get checked out up until the women in their lives push them to do so.

I recommend DLead products. They offer laundry detergent, hand wipes, hand soaps, and shower gels.

I shoot about 3-5 times a week during the competition season. Guns are cool and all but I do not wish to die from lead poisoning.
