Question Campfire Talk: When disagreements start about hunting….Rude or just being honest? Religion involved?

Was I being a little Viscious or rude by using verses?
Using the Bible isn't inherently bad, so it would depend on your heart posture of using it to counter their argument. To use it genuinely, no problem! But to bring it up as a personal attack to their convictions may be not the best idea. It sounds like you were okay👍🏻

As I was typing my previous response, this verse came to mind:
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”
‭‭John‬ ‭15‬:‭13‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Another verse - doesn't close well.

Genesis tells us that man has dominion over the animals. Keep in mind, I'm an atheist but I spent the first 20 years of my life as a believer so I learned some things.

That said, I would focus more on law and ethics when it comes to hunting philosophy and practice, not Bible verses.
Thanks

Yeh, to be honest, I think I was more 25% on the first part and 75% on the second.

Thanks

Considering you see these people somewhat often, I would strive to make ammends. Ask them questions, clear the air, be the one to take action. Don't viciously defend opinions, build up relationships in love. It'll be worth it.

I think I’ll have to work on this one. Thanks

"Trophy hunting" is a misunderstood concept even in this thread of gun enthusiasts. It's literally illegal not to use your meat it's called wanton waste and you will be fined for it. Hunting is so expensive and hard and the meat (generally) so tasty that if you aren't into meat you probably just don't hunt, there aren't really animals in CA especially that you can just shoot when you are bored. So when people "trophy hunt" they may be trying to get a large mature animal with nice antlers but they are also doing it with the intention to eat the animal. Even from a management perspective it's better to let animals get bigger and target older ones so in some ways the purely "meat hunters" that will take anything are worse for the population. Even in Africa it's misunderstood what role hunting has, the economy is so dependent on hunting that there is a built in incentive to manage the hunting properly so that there are animals to sell to rich westerners. Obviously the system isn't perfect but it's better than people think.

As for rubbing people the wrong way, it could be about hunting, it could be about religion, they might just not like your face or maybe they are intimidated by your handsomeness, but you can't really worry about it.

I also don’t see the point in trophy hunting, poaching, or blasting away at animals out of boredom. I do it for the meat to eat.

They were thinking from the thought of thou shalt not kill; and that killing is wrong.

I’m not sure how, but perhaps they’re not aware that the practice of animal sacrifices for atonement of sins and killing animals for food were common place with the Israelites at the time the 10 Commandments were written and for a long time afterwards? Or that the 10 Commandments apply to humans and doesn’t extend to animals? Now, if they are wanting to live a life as close as humanly possible to what Christ did, I could understand their conviction would be to take the most peaceful approach in all aspects of life, to include the killing of animals. Either way, it doesn’t sound like they are willing to change their stance and probably best not to waste time on trying.

The phrase "Trophy Hunting" doesn't help the optics either, even if the animal is eaten.

You all talk like childless white women
“ why don’t you make it fair and give the deer a gun “
“You can’t possibly care about the animals when you just kill them “
“Killing is bad mmm’kay “

I wouldn’t quote the Bible to justify hunting, but instead take a logical approach. Why do they dislike it? Probably because they think it seems barbaric, think it’s mean to kill animals, or think it’s bad for the environment (especially if they think you can just go ill anything you want as often as you want).

Tell them that hunting is heavily regulated BY BIOLOGISTS employed by the state, and it’s an important part of conservation efforts. Especially with invasive species like hogs that destroy the habitat of other animals and breed like crazy; hunting them preserves habitat and allows other natural fauna to flourish.

Also, consider if it’s the lesser of two evils compared to what they do. If they buy meat at a grocery store, they are endorsing and supporting a system that keeps animals in HORRIFIC, cramped, painful, disease-ridden conditions until they’re slaughtered. The meat they buy also often comes from FAR away and often involves a huge amount of water of water, food, and fuel not to mention water pollution and pollution from transportation to get the meat to their grocery store. It also often supports really bad practices like monoculture crops for feed and pesticide/antibiotic use which threaten the food chain. While I’m a meat eater myself, I try to buy more local meat and meat raised in farms/ranches where I have a better idea of what the conditions are like.

Even if you buy “responsible” meat at the store, consider the difference between that and what you hunt. The animal you took lived a full, natural, free life in the wild (the way “God” intended if that’s your/their thing) before you humanely took the animal with a heart/lung shot. If I were the animal in question, I’d rather have lived a life in the wild than crammed into a 3”x5” box my whole life.

If the people are vegans you won’t get anywhere, but I’ve found the above arguments fruitful with reasonable people. My fiancé is a biologist who has devoted her life to wildlife conservation and agrees with everything I wrote.

And you talk like someone whose kids won't talk to them. People don't understand what they arent exposed to, most of the population lives in urbanized areas with little access to hunting so they don't understand it. You can either make fun of them to guarantee that they vote against hunting and firearms or you can be open to helping them learn and even if they don't want to hunt themselves they can at least understand that it's not just blasting animals in the woods and leaving them on the ground but instead is an essential part of how we manage and pay for that management of wildlife.

Hunted for two reasons, food and pest control. Quail and Chukar are quite tasty in my opinion. Cotton tail is I do not like venison, elk, feral hog, or squirrel.
