FFL's that do PPT's for $47.19

Under California law, gun shops are restricted on how much they can charge for doing a private party transfer. If they do it right it should come out to $47.19. But I've gone into shops that make me buy a lock, charge for credit card use, charge for storage (this hasn't happened to me but to someone else), or some other charge. I know under the REVIEWS tab we have a list of FFL's that we like. But I'm talking just by price, which FFL's do you know of charge $47.19 for a PPT? You can throw in some bad one's to avoid if you'd like.

Solar tactical, are you talking about Castro valley or Livermore? Livermore requires the doj approved lock purchased within the last 30 days with receipt or purchase one from them.

I want to point out Reed's charge $100 dollar per week for storage fee if you don't pick up on the exact 10th day. I think it's ridiculous even though I understand that they don't make money on PPT. I also understand they don't want to keep the gun for weeks but sometimes people may have family events during Thanksgiving/Chistmas.
Btw, I have no problem with the clerks working there; my beef is with store policy and even though I've bought other guns from them and I was a range regular, I'll stop supporting them.

So it turns out the Gun Effects in City of Industry adds on $5 to a PPT and fails to mention it during the process.

Will never do another PPT there nor buy anything from them. They suck

I've experienced that particular Ammo Bros twice and experienced the same service. People say the same about Turner's but the one in Lake Forest is very fast and efficient.

If you ever find a shop that charges less than $10 for a DROS you need to give them a big kiss cause they're doing that out of the kindness of their hearts. The fee charged by the DOJ to the FFL's is $37.19, FFL's are allowed by law to charge $10 in addition to the $37.19 for the check. Something similar is true with FSC cards, the card only costs the dealer $15, but they're allowed to charge the customer an additional $10 as a service fee.

When an FFL goofs up a DROS and has to cancel it, they don't get back that $37.19 from the DOJ. With that said the DROS system is VERY unforgiving, and incredibly EASY to goof up. So in a way, that $10 charge is a way to save their backside when the guy behind the counter making minimum wage inevitably makes a mistake, and it's the only real way for FFL's to make money off of PPT's (aside from upsells). Knowing that they only make $10 off of each PPT, if you like the shop you do PPT's at buy some ammo and show them some love.

Cause when the dealer submits your DROS under firearms safety device, they can choose from a list that is. Antique, Approved Lock Box, FSD Purchased, OEM, Safe Affidavit. There is a list of approved locks for California and if you are buying a new gun and it comes with a lock that is approved you don't need to buy a lock because it is OEM. Just Google list of approved California approved gun locks.

Federal law requires that handguns must be accompanied by a lock though, so that’s what FFLs go by. I’ve been able to use the safe affidavit for long guns, but the cable lock has always been required for handguns, and that includes stripped AR pistol lowers. I think the lock “purchased within the last 30 days” rule from DOJ is total crap though. As if cable locks have evolved and one of the spare locks from the box full that everyone seems to have lying around isn’t sufficient.

Independence Armory, in Petaluma is a fantastic FFL. $47.19 for DROS and PPT. No appointment needed. Very cool employees!

The cheapest PPT I've ever done was Phantom Arms in HB. Did a PPT there few weeks ago and was charged $37.19, although I have to mention their shop is closing down could be why.

Another great place is Riflenetics in Garden Grove, CA. Super chill little new shop. They also release on undetermined. But call before going.

Some of ffls just stupidly invested themselves into cable locks that they now placed it into policy to get you to buy a lock.

Like AmmoBros invested into AmmoBros branded locks.

Absolutely stupid. I've done a handful of PPTs there and they pretty much make you buy a lock from them. Every pistol I've done had the manufacturer lock and they told me I needed to be a CA compliant one. I had extras from previous PPT there brand new still in the package that I brought with me to avoid buying a new one, and they asked for a receipt and it had to be purchased within the last 30 days... They're only $9 (plus tax) but it's just annoying and unnecessary

Your statement only applies to long guns.
Federal law requires handguns to have a lock when transferred.
The CA safe affidavit therefore only works for long guns which are not federally required to transfer with a lock.

I always charge 47.19 for one and if you dont have a lock I ususally just give you one free.
I dont charge any fees if you dont pick it up on the 10th day. I find that offensive when shops do that.
I also keep a fair assortment of mags around incase your ppt doesnt have one for the safety test.

I Recently did a trade my 1 gun for there 2 guns. Process took about 45 minutes. I was in a hurry as I was on my way to work. I get to the cashier and I’m acquiring two handguns in the PPT. Then I’m blindsided with the total charge of $117. WTF this shop charges $60 if you are getting more than one gun on a ppt. The fact that nobody mentioned anything the whole time until I had to swipe my card is really messed up.
They call it a Multiple Disposition Paperwork Fee

The furthest ones that are extremely efficient and doesn't charge extra are Durham Guns and Ammo (North of Sacramento) and Called2arms in Modesto.

I'd highly recommend both. Durham is a great store with great owner. Called2arms also doesn't require that you have a magazine for PPT. Excellent stores.
