Gun Stores charging extra fee for PPT.

Last PPT I did the shop said they could only do the transfer with the original lock or purchase a new one from them. . That there is a serial number and if it didn’t match they couldn’t process. They did offer to return $ at pick up

In my experience, 2A Zone Riverside is still top notch when it comes to PPTs for speed, cost, and accuracy.

We make it a point to be excellent when dealing with PPTs. You hate them, we hate them, we all hate them but we all have to do them. The goal is SPEED! In, out, mayyyybe try to sell you some ammo in the process

The title of this thread has been bugging me. There's no such thing as "extra".
As when buying a car- as soon as the customer lets the salesman list "extra charges" all over the price sheet; customer will lose. Get one OTD (Out The Door) number (since you'll be writing one check or credit card pass). That's the number to negotiate, you don't care what bucket the seller takes it from.

Keep your receipt on the lock that they force you to buy and return the lock after you pickup.

Can’t you avoid the lock issue if you tell them about your CA approved gun safe? That has worked for me a couple of times.

Not sure where most of you all do business but shops around here charge $10 plus the dros to rhe buyer and thats it. My FFL doesnt require mags or a lock. So all that BS is nonsense. My advice call around and find a shop tjat is no BS and just go there.

If they came with the factory lock, that's also acceptable.
It's also possible you found a couple FFL's that don't follow the rules or fudge the paperwork to make it easier.

Stores that tackle on BS fees usually gets least of my business or money.

Turner's especially, I go there to look or PPTs.

Then comes Rifle Supply that made it policy to charge 47.19 even when buying new guns. So they get my PPT business lol.

Quite a few I just don't make large purchases from unless they are having a sales event.

I put a FFL on blast before on Calguns. It was a well known store. The buyer of my PPT was charged like $80. The store owner jumped in and accused me of not knowing what I was talking about until he looked up his receipts and found his store employee was at wrong. No apology, just anger filled replies, and the only excuse was it was his employee's last day or something. I haven't been back there since.

Different from 2AZone. In terms of ownership, knowledge, and service. I believe they both came up rising around similar time on calguns. Both started as kitchen FFL then moved to brick/mortar almost close to similar time as well.

I stand corrected. You are right. A new federal law mandates cable locks for handguns. Here is a quote from Turner’s Outdoors.

1. State law allows persons who already own a safe or lock box to sign an affidavit attesting to ownership of those devices. However Federal law, which went into effect after the passage of CA law, mandates that a trigger lock accompany any handgun transfer without consideration of CA law. Cali's plan is to bankrupt gun stores and buyers. Make gun ownership so cost prohibitive, you just throw in the towel. We have no choice but to support these gun stores to keep their doors open. Low income are already being phased out of their 2nd amendment right, then it will be lower middle class. Then upper middle class. Well you get the point...
